The warm summer sun glistens and sparkles across the enchanting Amalfi Coast, while the dominating Mount Vesuvius keeps a watchful eye on the horizon.  Lying on the south-west coast of Italy, probably best known for its zesty crop of lemons, Sorrento is a seaside town that sees thousands visit every year. It sits atop cliffs that separate the town from its busy marinas: Piccolo, which is the larger one, and Grande, which is the smaller.

Pastel blue, four-storey houses line the seafront of Marina Grande, their shutters open and washing waving in the gentle summer breeze. The houses soon turn into sumptuous seafood restaurants where the ‘catch of the day’ is brought in by local fishermen in the morning. It is a bustling working marina by day and a peaceful place to sample delicious food by night. Marina Piccolo is a hub of activity. People hurry along the promenade, eager to get a window seat on their boat, the boat which will take them across the water to the nearby island of Capri. The rugged cliff edge forms the marina where from the top the views are jaw-dropping.

These stunning views can be seen from the beautiful balcony of the monastery of San Francesco, built in the 14th century. The vine-covered pillars of the cloisters and the adjoining church will leave you feeling like you are in a fairytale. Intertwining alleyways follow on from the monastery, each with their own characteristics. Venture down Via Padre Reginaldo Guiliani for delicious street food vendors, tucked-away local treasures, and delectable gelaterias. As you continue to explore the side streets of Sorrento, you will be led to its heart and soul; Piazza Tasso. At night, the square comes alive with tourists and locals alike, enjoying the mild evenings and soaking up the happiness and laughter in the air.

A visit to Sorrento, Italy, is often coupled with trips to the archaeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum. The UNESCO World Heritage Sites have tourists gathering to see the devastating effects that Mount Vesuvius had over both towns when it erupted in 79 AD. Wander around the dusty streets where Greek communities once proudly stood, and if you head in the right direction, you’ll also stumble across an ancient brothel, the signage of which leaves nothing to the imagination. After exploring the historic ruins, you can head to the summit of the infamous volcano that caused it all; there are many tours which can accommodate this. You’ll be treated to stunning views of the outstretched Amalfi Coast and the city of Naples nearby, which you’ll want to keep with you forever.
