Typical Norwegian food is probably best-known for being warm and hearty, and for primarily using locally-sourced ingredients. In-keeping with this tradition is Oslo’s rustic family-run restaurant, Den Glade Gris. As their little pink logo may suggest, Den Glade Gris specialises in delicious, freshly-prepared pork dishes, served with vegetables, potatoes, and a range of creamy sauces. Their mission? No food waste. This cosy, candelit establishment uses every last cut of their slow-cooked meat to create a range of unique and tasty dishes.

A vision in homely wooden surfaces and haphazard, pig-themed decorations, Den Glade Gris is certainly one-of-a-kind. The chalet-style restaurant is run by a team of smiling staff, who are always on hand to make recommendations from the lengthy list of choices. The chef’s special, and the most frequently-ordered item on the menu, is their signature pork knuckle, or langgrillet svineknoke (pictured above). A juicy cut of slow-cooked pork wrapped in crackling, the meat is served on a bed of creamy mashed potatoes, assorted vegetables, and a lake of mustard gravy. Everything is cooked to perfection, lovingly and proudly prepared by their expert chefs. Top it off with a craft beer from one of the local micro-breweries, or a glass of wine.

But don’t fret if you’re not a big meat-eater: the menu also boasts a number of alternative options, such as smoked salmon or goat’s cheese salad. Each item on the menu is accompanied by a drink pairing suggestion, to make sure your tastebuds are tingling.
