Famous for its striking red and green exterior, Café Regatta is one of the most well-known spots in Helsinki. Located in Töölö, a short walk from the city centre, this compact, brightly-painted chalet projects out onto the water, surrounded by a backdrop of dense greenery. Café Regatta feels a distinctly far cry from Helsinki’s characteristic brutalist architecture, reminding visitors of Finland’s intrinsic links with all things Christmassy: this is, after all, the home of Santa Claus Village.
The interior is every bit as quaint as the exterior, with knick-knacks littering every available surface, and narrow wooden benches inviting intimate conversation. Traditional ice skates dangle from the ceiling, the walls adorned with scenic paintings depicting Finland’s dramatically beautiful landscape.
Most people who visit Café Regatta come for their renowned hot chocolate, topped with a generous and decorative swirl of whipped cream. A glass cabinet displays also a range of pastries and snacks, including classic Scandinavian cinnamon buns.

Originally constructed in 1887 as a fishing shed, Café Regatta has existed since 2002, aiming to bring the Finnish countryside into the concrete landscape of Helsinki. During the summer months, the café offers a large outdoor seating area, with tables perched right at the water’s edge. When the weather grows warmer, kayaks, rowing boats and paddle boards are also available for hire, giving visitors the chance to truly experience the city’s unique coastline.
